About this listing

Welcome to the Drau apartment

The window here runs along almost the whole long side of the room, and the king bed lies lengthways to it. That means the Drau, the old town roofline on the far bank and the Karawanken behind it are the first things you see in the morning, without lifting your head off the pillow. And when you would rather not see any of it, the petrol-green blackout curtains draw across the entire wall of glass.

Highlights

  • Panorama window onto the river along the long side of the room, king bed placed lengthways to it
  • Petrol-green blackout curtains across the full width of the glass
  • 38.61 m² for four: king bed at the window end, three-seater sofa bed at the front of the room
  • Large built-in wardrobe with rail and hangers, plus a full-length arched mirror
  • Kitchenette with two hobs, fridge, sink and a Nespresso capsule machine
  • Round dining table with four chairs, and one floor lamp for the evening
  • TV with Netflix included and free WiFi
  • Own entrance, self check-in via key safe, the whole apartment to yourselves

The Space

Start at the window end. The king bed sits parallel to the panorama window, so you lie alongside the glass rather than head-on to a wall. It is made up Austrian style, with two separate duvets. The curtains are heavy petrol-green fabric hung across the full length of the window; drawn, they close the room off completely. Next to the bed is a large built-in wardrobe with rail and hangers, and a full-length arched mirror.

The front part of the room is where you sit and eat. A three-seater sofa folds out into a bed for two more guests, and a single floor lamp gives it a softer light in the evening than the ceiling spots. The round dining table with four chairs seats everyone at once. The kitchenette behind it does the daily work: two hobs, fridge, sink, a Nespresso capsule machine, pots, a pan, crockery, glasses and cutlery.

The bathroom keeps it simple: a glass shower cubicle with the shower head on a rail, a wall-hung WC, a washbasin under a mirror cabinet, and an electric wall boiler for the hot water. Bed linen and towels are already in the apartment, and there is a hair dryer. These are former ground-floor commercial units, converted in 2026; the conversion left one round concrete column bare and it was kept that way. Above you the ceilings are 2.65 m with track spots, and the floor is light oak parquet.

Location

Draupromenade 12 stands directly on the bank of the Drau. The riverside foot-and-cycle path, the Drau Cycle Path, runs past the building, and Villach is the handover point between stage 3 from Spittal and stage 4 towards Ferlach. The old town is on the opposite bank, a bridge away.

  • Old town and main square (Hauptplatz) with St. Jakob parish church — 5 minutes on foot across the bridge
  • Restaurants, cafés, shops and supermarkets — all in the old town, the same 5 minutes
  • Villach railway station — about 10 minutes on foot (roughly 1 km)
  • A2 motorway access — 5 minutes by car
  • Lake Faak 15 minutes, Lake Ossiach 20 minutes, Lake Wörth 25 minutes by car
  • Gerlitzen and Nassfeld ski and hiking areas within reach
  • Tarvisio in Italy 35 minutes, Kranjska Gora in Slovenia 40 minutes by car
  • Villacher Kirchtag at the end of July, one of Austria’s largest folk festivals — walking distance

Perfect For

  • Couples who want the view from the pillow — the bed faces the glass rather than a blank wall, so the river is there before you have sat up
  • Families and friends travelling as four — king bed at the window end, three-seater sofa bed at the front, 38.61 m² between the two
  • Cyclists on the Drau Cycle Path — the path runs past the building, and with your own entrance and a key safe you can roll in late in the day without waiting for anyone
  • Anyone who wakes with the light — the blackout curtains cover this window end to end, so the room goes dark even on a bright June morning

Good To Know

  • The apartment is on the ground floor and the riverside path passes the window. The petrol-green curtains are opaque and cover the full width of the glass.
  • Not here: washing machine, tumble dryer, dishwasher, oven, microwave, air conditioning, a desk to work at, a cot for a baby.
  • The shower is a hand shower on a rail inside a glass cubicle, not an overhead rain shower.
  • No balcony, terrace or garden.
  • No guest parking at the building. The Willroider car park is free and about 5 minutes on foot.
  • Villach city tourist tax is EUR 2.70 per person per night and is added to your booking total here, so nothing has to change hands at the door.
  • Cleaning fee EUR 95 per stay. Minimum stay is usually 2 nights. 10 % accommodation VAT is included in the rate.
  • There is a small yoga and movement studio in the building (Rio Lounge), with evening classes Monday to Thursday. It is quiet — yoga, not a gym — and it is run separately from us, so ask them directly if you would like to join a class.
  • Long-term residents live in the building. Quiet hours are 22:00 to 08:00, no parties or events, non-smoking throughout. We don’t take pets.
  • Only booked guests stay overnight. Daytime visitors are fine, just let us know.
  • Check-in from 15:00, check-out by 10:00. Self check-in via key safe; you get the code the day before you arrive.

Why Book Direct

Booking on happystay.at gets you the best available rate with no booking fees and no platform surcharges. It also means you can ask before you book, and this apartment tends to raise specific questions: how dark it really gets behind those curtains on a bright June morning, whether the sofa bed at the front works for two adults or is better for the kids, how much of the room the window actually takes up. You get an answer from us rather than a portal template.

The Other Apartments in the House

Five apartments share this building on the Draupromenade, and they are genuinely different from one another. If Drau is not the right shape for your trip, one of these probably is:

  • Turquoise — the largest, three zones and a lounge corner, sleeps 4
  • Gold — the padded window seat over the river, for 2
  • Pink — the reading nook in the window, for 2
  • Grass Green — one room for 4 on the quiet side

You can see all five side by side on our Villach page. We also host apartments in Vienna and Klagenfurt.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I really see the river from the bed?

Yes. The king bed is placed lengthways along the panorama window rather than against a wall, so lying down you are looking straight out at the Drau, with the old town on the far bank behind it.

With a window that big, is it dark enough to sleep?

It is. The petrol-green blackout curtains run the full width of the window and close it off completely, so you can sleep in as long as you like even on a bright summer morning.

The window is huge and you are on the ground floor — how private is that?

The riverside foot-and-cycle path runs past the window, so during the day there are walkers and cyclists going by. The curtains are opaque and cover the whole window, so you decide when the room is open to the outside and when it is not.

How do four people sleep here?

Two on the king bed at the window end, two on the three-seater sofa bed at the front of the room. Bed linen and towels are provided.

That is a lot of glass — what about hot summer days?

There is no air conditioning. The blackout curtains are heavy and run the full width of the window, so you can shut the glass off completely through the hottest part of the afternoon and open it up again in the evening.

Where do you sit in the evening?

At the front of the room: the three-seater sofa, the round table with four chairs, and one floor lamp that gives a softer light than the ceiling spots. The window end stays the bed end.
