Gold — Window Seat Apartment for Two on the Drau
Draupromenade 12, 9500 Villach, AustriaAbout this listing
Welcome to Gold
Gold is 30.65 m² for two, furnished with three ways to sit in it: a deep, padded window seat facing the Drau, a red vintage armchair, and four chairs at the round table for everything in between. A large gold-toned painting hangs on the wall, and the apartment is called Gold. The rest of the room — the king bed, the kitchenette, the wardrobe — does what it needs to do.
Highlights
- Deep, padded window seat facing the Drau, the old town roofline and the Karawanken mountains behind it
- Red vintage armchair, and a reading lamp for the evening
- Large gold-toned painting, the first thing you look at in the room
- King bed for two, blackout on every window
- Entire place with your own entrance, self check-in via key safe
- Kitchenette with two hobs, fridge, sink and a Nespresso capsule machine
- Glass shower cubicle and a mirror cabinet over the washbasin
- Free WiFi and a TV with Netflix included
The Space
The gold-toned painting is the first thing you look at, and the apartment is called Gold. The red vintage armchair stands in the same corner, and there is a reading lamp for the evening. The window seat is deep and padded with cushions — a seat, not a ledge — and it faces the river and the far bank. The 2026 conversion left one round concrete column standing in the room; the ceilings are 2.65 m with track spotlights, the parquet light oak.
The king bed is made up for two when you arrive, Austrian style with two separate duvets, and blackout covers every window. A wardrobe with hangers, so the case doesn’t stay on the floor. The round table has four chairs — two people rarely need all of them, but it is the right size for dinner, a game of cards or a map spread out. The kitchenette has two hobs, a fridge and a sink, plus pots, a pan, crockery, glasses and cutlery, and a Nespresso capsule machine for the first coffee of the day.
The bathroom is small and complete: a glass shower cubicle with a hand shower on a rail, a wall-hung WC, and a washbasin under a mirror cabinet that earns its place at six in the morning. Hot water comes from an electric wall boiler. Towels, bed linen and a hair dryer are already in the apartment before you get here.
Location
Draupromenade 12 sits directly on the riverbank, with the old town on the other side of the water. The nightlife is over there too — which is exactly why the evenings are quiet on this side.
- Drau Cycle Path: the riverside foot and cycle path runs past the building, and Villach is the handover point from stage 3 (Spittal–Villach) to stage 4 (Villach–Ferlach)
- Old town, main square (Hauptplatz) and the parish church of St. Jakob: 5 minutes on foot across the bridge
- Restaurants, cafés, shops and supermarkets: all in the old town, the same 5 minutes away
- Villach railway station: about 10 minutes on foot (roughly 1 km)
- A2 motorway access: 5 minutes by car
- Lake Faak 15 minutes, Lake Ossiach 20 minutes, Lake Wörth 25 minutes by car
- Gerlitzen and Nassfeld for skiing and hiking, both within reach
- Tarvisio (Italy) 35 minutes, Kranjska Gora (Slovenia) 40 minutes by car
- Villacher Kirchtag at the end of July, one of Austria’s largest folk festivals: walking distance
Perfect For
- Couples — a king bed, a window seat and a red armchair in 30.65 m² that belong to the two of you, with your own entrance and self check-in whenever you turn up.
- Cyclists on the Drau Cycle Path — you can ride up to the door, and afterwards the window seat puts you back in front of the river you spent the day riding along.
- Readers and slow risers — a reading lamp, blackout at every window, and the Nespresso machine two steps away in the kitchenette.
- Day trips — three lakes inside 25 minutes by car, Gerlitzen and Nassfeld for skiing and hiking, Italy and Slovenia under an hour away.
Good To Know
- Gold sleeps two. One king bed, no sofa bed, no extra sleeping space.
- Ground floor. The riverside foot and cycle path runs past the window, so people walk and ride by during the day. Blackout curtains are fitted on every window.
- No balcony, no terrace, no garden.
- No washing machine, no tumble dryer, no dishwasher, no oven, no microwave, no air conditioning. Two hobs, a fridge and the Nespresso machine cover coffee and a simple meal.
- No desk either — the round table is the surface you get.
- The shower is a hand shower on a rail in a glass cubicle, not an overhead rain shower.
- Pets are not offered.
- No guest parking at the building. The Willroider car park is free and 5 minutes on foot.
- Villach city tourist tax is EUR 2.70 per person per night and is added to your booking total here — nothing to pay in cash on arrival. 10 % accommodation VAT is included in the rate.
- Cleaning fee EUR 95 per stay. Minimum stay is usually 2 nights. Check-in from 15:00, check-out until 10:00.
- There is a small yoga and movement studio in the building (Rio Lounge), with evening classes Monday to Thursday. It is quiet — yoga, not a gym — and it is run separately from us, so ask them directly if you would like to join a class.
- Long-term residents live in the building. Quiet hours are 22:00 to 08:00. Non-smoking, no parties, no events. Only booked guests stay overnight; daytime visitors are fine, just let us know.
Why Book Direct
Booking on happystay.at gets you the best available rate — no booking fees, no platform surcharges on top. Gold is one room for two, so the questions that come up before a stay tend to be specific ones: how the window seat sits in the room, what you can realistically cook on two hobs, how much daylight the room gets in winter. Ask us and the answer comes from the people who look after this apartment.
The Other Apartments in the House
Five apartments share this building on the Draupromenade, and they are genuinely different from one another. If Gold is not the right shape for your trip, one of these probably is:
- Turquoise — the largest, three zones and a lounge corner, sleeps 4
- Drau — the bed at the panorama window, sleeps 4
- Pink — the reading nook in the window, for 2
- Grass Green — one room for 4 on the quiet side
You can see all five side by side on our Villach page. We also host apartments in Vienna and Klagenfurt.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is it called Gold?
A large gold-toned canvas hangs in the room, and it sets the tone for everything else — mustard cushions on the window seat, warm wood, the red armchair. Each of the five apartments in the building is named after something that defines it: a colour, or in one case the river itself.
Is the window seat something you can really sit in, or just a ledge?
It is deep and padded with cushions, built to be sat on rather than perched on, and it faces the river. A step away stands the red vintage armchair, so between the two of you nobody has to give up the good seat.
How do two people live in 30.65 m²?
Gold is one room: king bed, round table with four chairs, kitchenette, window seat and armchair, plus the bathroom and a wardrobe with hangers. It is booked for two — there is no second bed and no sofa bed — and it is an entire place with its own entrance, so you share the space with nobody.
It is on the ground floor with a path outside — how private is it?
The riverside foot and cycle path passes the window, so there is movement outside during the day. Every window has blackout covering; drawn, the room is private and dark. Evenings are quiet because the nightlife district is on the old town side of the river, not this one.
What can I cook in the kitchenette?
Anything that works on two hobs. There is a fridge, a sink, pots, a pan, crockery, glasses and cutlery, and a Nespresso capsule machine. No oven, no microwave and no dishwasher, so plan for stovetop meals and washing up by hand.
What is the bathroom like in the morning?
Workable for two. The washbasin sits under a mirror cabinet, which is the part you notice at six in the morning, and there is a hair dryer. The shower is a glass cubicle with a hand shower on a rail — not an overhead rain shower — and the hot water comes from an electric wall boiler.
