Landstraße — Travel Tips and Apartments
Our two apartments in Landstraße are on Radetzkystraße in the Weißgerber quarter, a few steps from the Danube Canal. Of our Vienna locations this is the most central: if you are coming to Vienna for the first time and want to see a lot on foot, this is the right base. Two numbers describe the location better than any adjective. The Radetzkyplatz tram stop is around 25 metres away, and a supermarket and a pharmacy are each a good 40 metres. KunstHausWien with its Hundertwasser museum is around 220 metres further as the crow flies.
Who this location suits
- First-time visitors who want to cover a lot on foot
- Guests without a car: trams 1 and O stop around 25 metres away
- Anyone doing a late shop — supermarket and pharmacy are on the same block
- Short trips where every minute saved in transit counts
Location and character: Weißgerber by the Danube Canal
Landstraße is Vienna’s 3rd district, densely built with 98,398 residents on 7.4 square kilometres (Vienna regional statistics, as of 1 January 2024). The City of Vienna describes it as the only inner district whose area extends beyond the Gürtel ring road, so it runs from the centre well outwards. Our apartments are in the Weißgerber quarter, in the northern tip right by the Danube Canal. The nearest point on the bank is around 176 metres away as the crow flies. In summer the canal is Vienna’s extended living room: bars on the water, street art along the embankment walls, and a continuous cycling and walking path.
What lies within walking distance
This location lives on how much is close by. The figures below are straight-line distances, not walking routes — the actual way is longer, and we have deliberately not converted them into minutes. Closest is KunstHausWien with the Hundertwasser museum, around 220 metres. The Hundertwasserhaus itself follows at around 530 metres. The Urania observatory and cinema is around 490 metres away, the Riesenrad in the Prater around 700 metres, the MAK around 780 metres. St Stephen’s Cathedral is around 1,300 metres away, the Stadtpark around 1,200 metres. Not within walking distance, however often it is presented that way: Belvedere Palace is around 2.3 kilometres away. For that, take tram O from Radetzkyplatz to Quartier Belvedere.
Everyday life on the same block
For short stays this is the underrated advantage of the address. A Spar is around 45 metres away, and the pharmacy on Radetzkyplatz around 40 metres. A Penny follows at around 270 metres, with several Billa branches and an Interspar around Wien Mitte all under 700 metres. The wider infrastructure is just as dense: within 800 metres alone there are seven pharmacies. We deliberately do not list opening hours — they change, and at least one of the nearby pharmacies is recorded as closing over lunch. Check quickly online before you set off.
The tram at your door
The Radetzkyplatz stop is around 25 metres from the front door — closer than most people are to their own car. Trams 1 and O stop there, along with night bus N29. Line O matters most for this location: southbound it runs via Wien Mitte to the main station, northbound across the Franzensbrücke to Praterstern. That puts two of Vienna’s three big rail hubs within reach without a single change.
Getting there & around
The shortest journey starts at the front door: the Radetzkyplatz tram stop is around 25 metres away, served by lines 1 and O. For Stephansplatz take line O three stops to Landstraße/Wien Mitte, then the U3 for two stops. Line O also reaches the main station without a change, ten stops. The nearest metro station with two lines is Landstraße/Wien Mitte with the U3 and U4, around 650 metres as the crow flies. Nestroyplatz on the U1 is nominally closer, but it lies across the Danube Canal — the walk goes over a bridge and is considerably longer than the straight-line figure suggests. For the airport: normally the City Airport Train runs nonstop from Wien Mitte, with the operator quoting 16 minutes and a half-hourly service. Important for your planning: from 7 September 2026 until the end of October 2027 Vienna’s central rail corridor is being renovated, and the Wien Mitte S-Bahn station is closed for that period. The City Airport Train runs as a replacement bus, and the S7 airport train terminates at St. Marx. The U3 and U4 keep running and are in fact more frequent. For how things stand on your travel date, check with ÖBB rather than relying on this page. We do not quote journey times in minutes for the city transport network: its timetable service could not be retrieved in a citable form, and estimated figures would be no help.
Parking
A short-stay parking zone covers the whole of Vienna, the 3rd district included. It applies on working days from Monday to Friday between 9:00 and 22:00; with a parking voucher or the HANDYPARKEN app you may stay two hours at most. After 22:00 and on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, parking is free. One detail that matters in the 3rd district: several streets are designated shopping streets, exempt from the blanket zone with different hours and a shorter maximum stay — among them Landstraßer Hauptstraße, Marxergasse and Kardinal-Nagl-Platz. Radetzkystraße is not one of them, so the standard rule applies there. The binding source remains the city’s short-stay parking map, not this page. Frankly: with a tram stop 25 metres away, a car in this location is more burden than help.

Frequently asked questions
Is Landstraße a good base for a first visit to Vienna?
Yes — of our Vienna locations it is the best one for that. You can walk to the Danube Canal, KunstHausWien and the Hundertwasserhaus; St Stephen’s Cathedral is around 1,300 metres away as the crow flies. On top of that, the tram stops around 25 metres from the door. If you are after quiet and greenery, Oberlaa or Floridsdorf will suit you better — this is urban and dense.
How do I get from the airport to Landstraße?
Normally by City Airport Train to Wien Mitte station, quoted by the operator at 16 minutes nonstop, every half hour. Please note: from 7 September 2026 until the end of October 2027 the Wien Mitte S-Bahn station is closed for the renovation of Vienna’s central rail corridor. The City Airport Train runs as a replacement bus during that time and the S7 terminates at St. Marx. Do check with ÖBB how the connection looks on your arrival date.
Can I walk to Belvedere Palace?
Belvedere is around 2.3 kilometres away as the crow flies — that is beyond comfortable walking distance, however it is sometimes presented. Tram O from Radetzkyplatz to the Quartier Belvedere stop is easier.
Is there a supermarket nearby?
Yes, and unusually close: a Spar is around 45 metres away as the crow flies and a Penny around 270 metres. The pharmacy on Radetzkyplatz is around 40 metres away, and there are seven pharmacies within 800 metres in total. We deliberately do not give opening hours, because they change.
Is there a city tax in Vienna?
Yes, the Ortstaxe is a statutory charge levied by the City of Vienna. If you book directly with us it is already included in the price shown — nothing is added on arrival.
Do I need a car here?
No, and it would mostly get in the way. Trams 1 and O stop around 25 metres away, and the Landstraße/Wien Mitte metro station with the U3 and U4 is around 650 metres off. If you do drive: Vienna’s short-stay parking zone applies on working days from Monday to Friday between 9:00 and 22:00, two hours maximum per voucher.
