Floridsdorf — Travel Tips and Apartments
Our three apartments in Floridsdorf are in Donaufeld, a few hundred metres from the Franz-Jonas-Platz transport hub. Floridsdorf lies on the left bank of the Danube — for guests that means you stay where Vienna is everyday life rather than scenery. The City of Vienna records the 21st district as the one with the lowest density of visitors. That has two very concrete consequences. The pleasant one: shops everywhere, several supermarkets within a few hundred metres, and the S7 takes you to the airport without a single change. The inconvenient one, said upfront: there is no through connection to Stephansplatz. You will always change once.
Who this location suits
- Guests arriving by air: the S7 runs from Floridsdorf station to Vienna Airport with no change
- Anyone who cooks — Billa, Lidl, Spar and Penny are all within a few hundred metres as the crow flies
- Summer guests: Alte Donau and Donauinsel are a good kilometre away
- Longer stays in a residential district rather than a tourist quarter
Location and character: left bank of the Danube
At roughly 44 square kilometres Floridsdorf is one of Vienna’s large districts, home to 186,233 people (Vienna regional statistics, as of 1 January 2024). Forty-four per cent of its area is green space and water. It has grown strongly: up by about a quarter since 2014. Our apartments sit in Donaufeld, one of the district’s eight parts. The character is deliberately unspectacular — residential blocks, markets, trams. If you want an address to show off, this is the wrong place. If you want a base from which everything works and which is quiet in the evening, it is the right one.
Shopping and everyday life — easy here
This is the clear strength of the location. Within 300 metres as the crow flies there is a Billa, a Lidl, a Spar and a Penny; the station centre at Franz-Jonas-Platz adds an Interspar. The nearest pharmacy, the Rosen-Apotheke on Brünner Straße, is around 310 metres away, with two more just behind it. Add to that smaller food shops right nearby, some with Middle Eastern and Persian ranges, for ingredients the supermarket does not carry. If you are staying longer and cooking for yourself, Floridsdorf is the most convenient of our Vienna locations. One note in our own interest: opening hours change, and we deliberately do not list any here. Check quickly online before heading out in the evening.
Water: Alte Donau and Donauinsel
In summer this is the reason to stay here. The nearest bank of the Obere Alte Donau is around 1,040 metres away as the crow flies, the Donauinsel around 1,550 metres. The Alte Donau is a still backwater with lidos, boat hire and restaurants along the shore; the Donauinsel is the long recreational island between the Danube and the relief channel. Both are close enough to walk — how long it takes depends on your route, and we have not measured the walking distance. That is why there is deliberately no time given here. Closer by, for a quick loop: Paul-Hock-Park, around 300 metres away.
The Franz-Jonas-Platz interchange
Around 375 metres from the apartments as the crow flies lies one of Vienna’s largest transport interchanges. The U6, tram lines 25, 26, 27, 30 and 31, a dozen bus routes, several night buses, the ÖBB station and a bus terminal all meet here. In practice that means almost anything you want to reach in Vienna starts with a short walk to this one square. The station centre also has shops and places to eat — useful if you arrive late. If local history interests you: the Marktamtsmuseum is around 175 metres away, the Floridsdorf district museum around 715 metres.
Getting there & around
The strongest point first: you reach Vienna Airport on the S7 from Wien Floridsdorf station without a single change, twelve stops. The station is around 485 metres away as the crow flies. S1 and S2 take you directly to Vienna’s main station, seven stops. The weakest point, named honestly: there is no through connection to Stephansplatz. You either take the U6 five stops to Spittelau and change to the U4, or the S-Bahn four stops to Wien Mitte and change to the U3. Neither is complicated, but a change it remains. Locally the network is dense. The U6 terminates in Floridsdorf, with the station around 490 metres away. Franz-Jonas-Platz adds trams 25, 26, 27, 30 and 31 plus numerous bus and night bus routes. We deliberately give no journey times in minutes — we found no reliable source for them, and estimated figures would not help you plan.
Parking
A short-stay parking zone covers the whole of Vienna, the 21st district included. It applies on working days from Monday to Friday between 9:00 and 22:00; with a parking voucher or the HANDYPARKEN app you may stay two hours at most. After 22:00 and on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, parking is free. For the 21st district the City of Vienna lists only one deviating rule, and it concerns a car park far out at the Bisamberg. Designated shopping streets may have their own hours. The binding information for your particular street, and the current tariffs, come from the city’s short-stay parking map, not from this page.

Frequently asked questions
Is Floridsdorf a good base for a first visit to Vienna?
If it is your first time and you mainly want to see the old town, it is not the obvious choice — Stephansplatz means one change. Floridsdorf plays to different strengths: a direct airport link, very good local shopping, water nearby and quiet evenings. For a second visit, a longer stay or a trip involving a flight, it makes a good base.
How do I get from the airport to Floridsdorf?
Without changing: S-Bahn line S7 runs from Vienna Airport all the way to Wien Floridsdorf station, twelve stops. From the station it is around 485 metres as the crow flies to our apartments. This is the simplest airport connection among our Vienna locations.
Are there supermarkets nearby?
Yes, plenty. Within around 300 metres as the crow flies you will find Billa, Lidl, Spar and Penny, plus an Interspar in the station centre. The nearest pharmacy is around 310 metres away. We deliberately do not list opening hours here, because they change.
Can I go swimming from the apartment?
The nearest bank of the Obere Alte Donau is around 1,040 metres away as the crow flies, the Donauinsel around 1,550 metres. Both are popular places to swim in summer. How long the walk takes depends on your route — we have not measured it, so we give no time.
Is there a city tax in Vienna?
Yes, the Ortstaxe is a statutory charge levied by the City of Vienna. If you book directly with us it is already included in the price shown — nothing is added on arrival.
Do I need a car in Floridsdorf?
No. The Franz-Jonas-Platz interchange is around 375 metres away and brings together metro, tram, bus and rail. If you do drive: Vienna’s short-stay parking zone applies on working days from Monday to Friday between 9:00 and 22:00, two hours maximum per voucher. Evenings, weekends and public holidays are free.
